You Are….Guilty!

Well, here we are in the Christmas season. I hope this finds you blessed and surrounded by those you love, in spite of these turbulent times we live in. No one could have guessed what 2020 was going to turn out to be and it definitely has put things into perspective. As this season sets upon us all, I find myself reminiscing about life and situations that have happened over my 42 years. There have been a lot of good times, but there have also been hard and sad times. There has been loss and there has been tears. One of the hardest realities about life is that there are no re-dos. There are so many instances in my life that if I knew then what I do now, I could have and would have done something different. I think back on those situations and carry regret and blame and I judge myself as guilty for what happened.

I believe that is a flesh response to so many situations in peoples’ lives. Because we can not control an outcome and it sometimes goes the wrong way, we then dwell on that thought and re-play it in our minds. As we think on the details and break it down, we cast blame and judge ourselves guilty. We are guilty for not doing it different or for making the choices that we did. We beat ourselves up mentally and carry the guilt of ‘Why didn’t I do it this way’ or ‘How could I not have stopped what happened.’ Eventually we learn to deal with the past and except what happened, but the guilt and blame we cast on ourselves can take a long time to get over. Some people are still dealing with regret and guilt from decades ago, and so many feel helpless to overcome it. We can blame others for mistakes in our lives, but the blame and guilt on ourselves, no one else will truly understand.

This is where I would like to offer a little hope. We can’t change the past or the sequence of events that got us where we are today, but we can change how we will deal with the future. We need to look at these events differently and realize, we can’t plan how it will all go, but how we deal with the ups and downs and our spirit through those events is what is important. The Bible gives us some scriptures on how to deal with guilt and mistakes. It is written in 1 John 1:9, ‘If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.’ Also in Romans, 8:1 it is written ‘There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.’ These scriptures pertain to so many instances in life but the point is, there is no reason to carry any guilt or judgment for yourself or others when Christ covers it ALL. Romans 8:28 also states, ‘And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to His purpose.’ This tells us there is a reason for everything we go through and even the worst times are for the kingdom of God. One more scripture to share is in Hebrews 12:2, ‘Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.’ Let the shame, the blame, and the guilt go because nothing will outdo the love and mercy of God and His son Jesus. Turn it over to God and He will give you a peace that trumps any guilt!
